Cutting Edge Care with Telemedicine

What is Telemedicine?

Telemedicine uses technology to deliver medical care directly to your preferred electronic device. In order to preserve the highest level of care, the same experience that would occur in the clinical setting is provided. A detailed history, modified physical examination, and a comprehensive plan including testing and treatment is offered. Enjoy the convenience of being seen via a secure portal from anywhere and get the world-class expertise you deserve.

Consultations

In order to optimize the care that is provided, it may be necessary to review some of your clinical history prior to the encounter to ensure that a telemedicine visit is right for you. There are some legal and financial restrictions, described below. In general, the following services are offered:

New consultations

As occurs in clinic, participation in a full consultation is available to assess your sleep. Beyond a careful and comprehensive history, complemented by a relevant physical examination, the consulting physician will provide education on your condition. As needed, testing can be arranged and treatment recommendations will be provided. The following disorders may be evaluated:

  • Insomnia

  • Circadian Rhythm Disorders

  • Snoring

  • Sleep Apnea

  • Restless Legs Syndrome

  • Sleep Behaviors (Parasomnias)

  • Narcolepsy

  • Hypersomnia (Excessive Sleepiness)

  • Other Sleep Disorders

Follow-up visits

Once care is established, telemedicine is an excellent means to follow up on the management of your condition. Technology eases access for these encounters and allows for optimal long-term therapy. For sleep apnea patients, continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy data can be reviewed and treatment changes made. Prescriptions for supplies and medications and orders for other interventions can be arranged.

INSOMNIA THerapy

For those individuals who desire more support beyond the self-guided program for cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBTI) provided with Insomnia Solved, one-on-one sessions with therapists are available through various resources. These visits can include education, targeted advice, and recommendations to resolve insomnia. Specific opportunities include:

  • Sleep Education

  • Relaxation Training

  • Individualized Recommendations

Depending on your interest, it may be possible to arrange sessions as needed or enroll in a full 6-week program delivered via telemedicine.

RESTRICTIONS

Unfortunately, telemedicine is not available to everyone yet.

In order to participate, it will be important to consider your insurance and state of residence. Insurance coverage is often equivalent to in-clinic visits, and Medicare patients are now covered. Cash payment options may be offered as needed. Many states are becoming increasingly supportive of telemedicine options to deliver healthcare.

There are certain technological requirements, including reliable internet access and a smartphone, tablet, or computer with a webcam, microphone, and speakers.

If you are interested in learning more about the telemedicine options, or to arrange a telemedicine visit with Dr. Peters, contact his office at Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle by calling (206) 625-7180 for further details. It should be noted that he has medical licenses in both Washington state and California.

If your insurance or local laws do not allow for a telemedicine visit, it may be possible to direct you to further resources. Consider these directories of centers and specialists who manage sleep disorders for more information:
